vSphere 6.5 & storage performance issues – vmw_ahci fixed in ESXi 6.5U1

 In Product updates, VMware

Few months ago I have wrote an article about performance issues with new native vmw_ahci driver in ESXi. Luckily with ESXi 6.5U1 the problem is fixed.

Please not that you should not get into trouble even when running on ESXi 6.5 if you follow HCL. This issue is only related to standard SATA controllers commonly found in DIY home lab servers.

With ESXi 6.5U1 new vmw_ahci driver is fixed and no performance issues are observed anymore.

You can easily check what version of vmw_ahci driver is installed with

esxcli system module get –m vmw_ahci

If you have disabled the native vmw_ahci driver before, you can safely enable it again

esxcli system module set --enabled=true --module=vmw_ahci

Please note that once you have re-enabled native driver you need to reboot your ESXi server.
